When is the last time you did something for someone you’ve never met?  For me, I can’t think of a time when I did that. Most of the things I share with others about giving and caring are done when you know the person you are doing it for.

Which is why I was quite surprised by this weekend to get a FREE Christmas tree!

Yep…I said that right!

Let me explain.

It’s been a busy few weeks, and getting this years tree had escaped me, not to mention all the snow and rain. But today was going to be different. After attending two christmas parties, we headed to a local tree lot.  As we are looking around at the 20 or so available remaining trees, I see one that had something on it. It wasn’t the standard tag like the others, although it had one of those too. This tree had a 3×5 size business card like magnet on it.  It was for Urgent Care.

Here is a photo of the Magnet.

I have never seen a magnet hung on a Christmas tree PRIOR to selling it. Normally you hang things on the tree after buy it and set it up in your home!  So I turned to Lisa and said, “Did you see that?” She looked it over, then gave me an odd look. She then turned one of the lot employees and said, “What’s with the magnet?”

The employee then informed us that the tree was FREE! We were very confused.  And I mean VERY! He then explained that Urgent Care does this on a number of trees each year, and that he thought all of them were gone already but apparently, we just got a $47 tree for FREE!

He then cut the stump, wrapped the tree, then loaded it in my Truck, all while we followed him in disbelief.

I’ve said it before, you don’t need to spend a lot of money on people to really impress them and get them to talk about you!

This move, by Urgent Care of Arlington MA, met a number of the pillars I talk about in my book on how to get others to refer your business.  First, they are caring. Now you might call it marketing, but if I’m there for a tree, then this is a caring move! Second, they surprised me! Third, they over delivered. After all they could have done a $10 off coupon or something, instead they paid for the tree! Non Self-Serving Act! Giving trees away doesn’t directly benefit them. It’s not giving a discount on their service!

Well done Urgent Care, well done!

Your actions have resulted in me noticing, and I applaud you for what you are doing!  Keep it up!
